Daring new communities: Living solidarity in an individualised society

An international exchange

22 May 2025, online

The increasing individualisation of society is a cause for concern for many people in the UNECE region: loneliness, social fragmentation and a lack of cohesion are becoming increasingly apparent. At the same time, new forms of communities are emerging in many places, in which people support each other across generations and live together in solidarity.

At this online event, civil society representatives from the UNECE region presented inspiring examples of successful new communities and intergenerational initiatives. Together, it was discussed how such initiatives can be strengthened and disseminated.

The event was part of the series ‘An engaged civil society as engine for an age-friendly society: an international exchange’. The series, which comprises a total of six online events until the end of 2026, offers representatives of civil society the opportunity to exchange ideas with non-governmental organisations from countries in the UNECE region. It also serves to provide information on current international developments in the field of ageing policy and human rights of older persons.

The report of the event will soon be published on this page.
