Shaping the future together: Political priorities for ageing societies in the UNECE region
An international exchange
2 December 2025, online
What policy areas and topics need more attention in regional efforts to build societies for all ages? This question lies at the heart of a current workstream of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) responsible for updating the Regional Implementation Strategy (RIS) of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) of 2002.
In this online event, results of the national stakeholder exercises undertaken to discuss about future ageing policy have been presented. Representatives of civil society from across the UNECE region discussed future priorities for ageing policy. Aim was to explore the challenges that ageing societies in the region are facing and to discuss how rights-based frameworks could help create inclusive, fair and sustainable societies. The event also identified key areas for action and gave information on the ongoing update of MIPAA/RIS and the upcoming negotiations for a new UN convention on the rights of older persons.
The event was part of the series ‘An engaged civil society as engine for an age-friendly society: an international exchange’. The series, which comprises a total of six online events until the end of 2026, offers representatives of civil society the opportunity to exchange ideas with non-governmental organisations from countries in the UNECE region. It also serves to provide information on current international developments in the field of ageing policy and human rights of older persons.
